Earth Recordings revisits the album on its 20th anniversary with a vinyl release. Originally released in 2000, the guitar playing highlights a contemplative songwriting style uncommon for this artist. The traditional ballads are jazzy and bluesy, reworked with contributions from guitarists Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler, and Johnny "Guitar" Hodge, along with guest vocals from Bert's wife Loren Auerbach ("My Donald"). The addition of electric guitar subtly complements Bert's percussive fingerpicking, bringing new depth to his compositions. The title track, "Crimson Moon," is a version of the traditional song "Omie Wise" and was dedicated to his wife Loren. "Caledonia" evokes pastoral images of Scotland, along with covers of the Incredible String Band's "October Song," Guy Mitchell's "Singing the Blues," and Owen Hand's "My Donald." Released when the artist was 60, "Crimson Moon" demonstrates that Bert Jansch was still an innovator and a unique talent.
