Dando Shaft, An Evening with, LP UK Youngblood Music 1970 - SSYB6

Production was entrusted to Miki Dallon of the Youngblood label: the credit for the release of this first album goes largely to their first manager Sandy Glenlon, who worked tirelessly to attract record executives to the band's first performances in Coventry. But it's interesting to recount the unique situation that allowed the band to sign a contract with Youngblood. The musicians had come to London with the intention of recording a single at PYE Studios, but the studio had already been booked by Johnny Silvo, a musician on the rise at the time (he had also recorded an album with Sandy Denny). In a daring move, knowing that Miki Dillon would be in the studio that day, Glenlon managed to snatch the studio from Johnny Silvo: Dillon was thus favorably impressed and proposed to Dando Shaft to release their first album. The recording took place at PYE Studios itself, even in half a day's work: the musicians sat in a semicircle with an ambient microphone in the center. The whole thing was perfectly acoustic. Listening to it today, that recording seems to have been made outdoors, with the sound of rain in the background (after all, "Rain" is the album's opening track). The feeling is that the band hadn't yet made any clear choices; everything seems rather unripe. The compositions have a variety of influences, and among these, the English tradition is definitely noticeable, particularly in "September Wine" and "Drops of Brandy."

La produzione fu affidata a Miki Dallon dell’etichetta Youngblood: il merito dell’uscita di questo primo album è dovuto in gran parte al loro primo manager Sandy Glellon che si diede da fare tantissimo per attrarre i discografici alle prime esibizioni del gruppo a Coventry. Ma è interessante raccontare la singolare situazione che ha permesso al gruppo di stipulare il contratto con quelli della Youngblood. I musicisti erano scesi a Londra con l’intenzione di registrare un singolo nei PYE Studios ma la sala era già prenotata da Johnny Silvo, un musicista sulla breccia in quegli anni (aveva anche inciso un album con Sandy Denny). Con una mossa spregiudicata, sapendo che Miki Dillon sarebbe quel giorno passato dagli studi, Glellon riuscì a soffiare la sala a Johnny Silvo: fu così che Dillon rimase favorevolmente impressionato e propose ai Dando Shaft di pubblicare il primo album. La registrazione avvenne negli stessi PYE Studios in neppure mezza giornata di lavoro: i musicisti si sedettero in semicerchio con un microfono ambientale al centro. Il tutto perfettamente acustico. A riascoltarla oggi, quella registrazione sembra fatta all’aperto, con un rumore di pioggia sullo sfondo (del resto, “Rain” è il pezzo iniziale del disco). La sensazione è che la band non avesse fatto ancora scelte precise, il tutto appare alquanto acerbo, le composizioni hanno suggestioni diverse e, tra queste, si nota senz’altro la tradizione inglese, che spicca in “September wine” e “Drops of brandy”.
