Jacqui McShee writes her name in the golden book of folk with a masterful interpretation of three memorable tunes (A Maid That's Deep in Love, When I Was in My Prime, and Cruel Sister); John Renbourn records the most emotional and "electric" version of all time of "Lord Franklin"; Bert Jansch, with Terry Cox, and Danny Thompson, lights up an entire side of an LP with Jack Orion, an inimitable example of folk-progressive. Cruel Sister is Pentangle's folk masterpiece: driven by Jansch's passion, it becomes the melancholic culmination of the group's explorations. Less jazz and blues, perhaps an exercise in style: certainly the quintet's most beloved, though not best-selling, work.
